What Homeowners Insurance does not cover?

Continued...

For the reason that homeowner's insurance policies, similar to any other official document, time and again include to some extent confusing language, write down any questions you have as you look through your policy, and ask your insurance representative for a full explanation. If your financial standing has enhanced in view of the fact that you took out your policy, find out what the next level of coverage is, its cost and whether or not you and your family could benefit from the additional protection. A variety of regions of the country, of course, are vulnerable to certain weather conditions (hurricanes and tornadoes, for example), as well as natural forces (earthquakes). Ask friends and relatives -- particularly those residing in the same city -- what type of coverage they have chosen and if they're satisfied. As a homeowner, you regularly inspect your appliances and conduct tune-ups as needed. You should approach your homeowner's insurance policy in the same manner. It could prove to be one of the most valuable possessions you own.

Homeowner's insurance does present coverage for personal property, however this coverage is limited. Under a standard homeowner's policy, the coverage for all your personal property is limited to 50 percent of the coverage amount on your home. You can boost your personal property coverage by purchasing either an additional endorsement or a rider. Unfortunately, renter's insurance and other homeowner's insurance policies are designed for single individuals and traditional families. So when dissimilar individuals share a residence, insurance coverage can become complicated. Insurance companies suggest that each person buy renter's insurance policies. Insurance policies vary from one company to the next, so be sure to pose this question when applying for the coverage. Homeowner's policies on a regular basis provide protection for off-premises destruction or theft, which covers your possessions whereas they are outside your home. If your policy does not contain off- premises protection as part of your standard coverage, you may be able to purchase this coverage for an additional charge. Washington, Laura (1998)
